Check up x-rays (bite-wings), are generally taken once a year which aid in detecting caries (decay). Full mouth x-rays are taken when a patient first enters the practice and are repeated every five to seven years. These x-rays show both the ends of the roots and the supporting bone of these roots. These x-rays are particularly helpful in finding infections originating either from abscessed teeth, or from teeth that have lost their bone support. They can also be used to detect cysts and tumors which occasionally occur in the jaws.
